Postdoctoral researcher

The Institut d’histoire de la Réformation, University of Geneva, is advertising a position for a

Postdoctoral researcher (3 Years, 100%)

in association with the project At the Crossroads of Early Modernity: An Interdisciplinary Study of John Mair (c.1467–1550), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation Consolidator Grant programme (no. 223039) for the period 2024-2029.

The postdoctoral researcher will work with the PI Prof. Giovanni Gellera and with a doctoral student on a project which explores the thought of the Scottish theologian and philosopher John Mair along three main axes:

  1. The relationship between theology and philosophy
  2. Mair’s activities as a “public intellectual”
  3. Mair’s vast international and interconfessional network of students and collaborators

The project will draw on expertise in the history of philosophy and theology, intellectual history, history of ideas, book history and history of universities. Digital editions of John Mair’s texts will be created as Linked Open Data.

Job qualification and requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant field (medieval and/or early modern philosophy, theology, intellectual history, or history of universities)
  • Working knowledge of Latin
  • Familiarity with late medieval and/or early modern texts
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn digital humanities tools and practices

The postdoctoral assistant will conduct independent research aligned with the project’s aims and contribute to its research outputs, including events and publications.

The postdoctoral researcher at the Institut d’histoire de la Réformation will benefit from the Institute’s activities and a friendly and supportive research environment in an interdisciplinary context. Fluency in French is not required, but a willingness to learn and speak French will enhance the candidate’s work and life experience.

Starting date

1 September 2025, or date to be agreed upon.
