Abstract

Focusing on colonial and postcolonial interactions with Maroons and Amerindians in the Caribbean Amazon (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and parts of Brazil and Venezuela), this research assesses how colonial expectations about the environmental practices of these communities have constructed their environmental identities, and how these identities in turn have influenced their current position within the extractive economies or environmental narratives of the respective countries.
