Open rank Professorship in Archaeology of the Roman Provinces

A professorship in Archaeology of the Roman Provinces is to be filled at the Department of Archaeological Sciences of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bern on 1st February 2027.

The successful candidate will have an international reputation in research and teaching. A broad research profile in the archaeology of the Roman provinces is expected, with a focus on the northern and western provinces. A chronological focus on earlier periods is desirable, with particular attention to processes of transformation. Sound expertise in empirical and digital research methods is an advantage. The person will represent the archaeology of the Roman provinces in teaching across the entire temporal and methodological spectrum. The person to be appointed is internationally recognised in research and teaching, has experience in university didactics, archaeological field research, personnel management and in acquiring project funding.

Cooperation within the institute and the new department structure is expected, as is collaboration with national agencies and cantonal archaeology departments. A willingness to cooperate with other institutions and research centres within the faculty and the university is also desirable.

For appointment to a full or associate professorship, a habilitation or equivalent qualifications is required, for appointment as an assistant professor with tenure track, a well-advanced postdoctoral project or equivalent qualifications should be presented.

The ability and willingness to teach and supervise in German are required. If the ability to teach and supervise in German is not already present, it is expected that this will be acquired within two years.

Depending on the qualifications of the person, the position will be filled as an assistant professorship with tenure track, associate professorship or full professorship.
