From 30 June to 2 July 2027, the conference entitled “Multiple Border Changes and Biographical Trajectories: The East Central European Borderlands in the Age of Territorial Revisionism, 1918–1941” will take place at the University of Bern, Switzerland. It is organised by the research team of the SNSF Project “Epicentre of Territorial Revisionism: The Carpatho-Ukraine under Multiple Border and State Control Changes, 1914–1946”. The conference focuses on the reciprocal relationship between people and borders, addressing both how people’s lives were shaped by borders and border shifts and how people themselves contributed to the shaping of these borders.
Geographically, the conference focuses on the post-Habsburg borderlands with particular interest in the post-Trianon nation states along the Carpathian arc (Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Ukraine).
The deadline for submissions is 8 November 2026. You will find the full call for papers and further information on how to apply in the document below. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail (carpathians.hist@unibe.ch).
