Visual History – neues Portal zur visuellen ländlichen Geschichte

Images are important sources for historical research. Today, they also play an increasingly important role in historiography. The Archives of Rural History has therefore created the new online portal ‘Visual History’ in collaboration with the European Rural History Organisation (EURHO), the Agricultural History Society, and the European Rural History Film Association (ERHFA).

The portal brings together two series: ‘Video Essays in Rural History’ and ‘Photo Essays in Rural History’. Video essays, an independent form of communicating historical knowledge, use the potential of visual sources and moving images to provide new insights and advance a thesis or argument. The new Photo Essays in Rural History series aims to highlight the importance of images as historical sources, objects of research, and means of communicating historical knowledge.

The portal will be officially launched on 5 May 2026 at an online event.

Further information about the event and a registration link are available on the Visual History portal.
