Abstract
This study analyzes the concept, implementation and use of the e-learning application Ad fontes (www.adfontes.uzh.ch). Ad fontes has been developed at the History Department of the University of Zurich and targets students confronted with the special problems of historical research in archives. Part 1 focuses on the theoretical background and discusses learning theories and e-learning scenarios as well as the topics of multimedia, hypertext and interactivity. Part 2 gives an introduction to the functionality and the content of Ad fontes and highlights some didactical, organisational, creative and technical aspects of the concept and the implementation. Part 3 describes the use of Ad fontes in several university courses and the experiences gained. Ad fontes has been evaluated internally and by external experts. The results of these evaluations are summarised and reflected. A statistical analysis of server and user data gives a quantitative overview over the usage of Ad fontes and verifies some assumptions and theses from the concept empirically. Some thoughts about the cost-effectiveness of Ad fontes and e-learning in general conclude the study.
