Abstract

This dissertation examines Switzerland's economic history during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, analyzing globalization's impact on trade, policymaking, and society. Using a granular trade dataset (1892-1938), it explores trade patterns, specialization, and responses to global shifts, investigates trade's political economy through tariff referenda, and examines the link between trade shocks and district-level mortality
