HSSuisse 2024 - Connecting Switzerland based early career scholars in the History of Science

Conférence

HSSuisse 2024 will take place on May 31st, 2024, at the University of Geneva. It will be organized by Lucas Müller and David Robertson, and hosted by the University of Geneva’s Département de géographie et environnement and History of Science & Science Education group.

The meeting offers early career scholars the opportunity to connect with other historians of science in Switzerland, to familiarize ourselves with each others’ current research, and to discuss ongoing historiographical trends and issues. We are looking for participants to give 10-minute presentations. Presentations can be either finely polished, works in progress, or projects in the making that are seeking input from others in the field. Each session will have three papers and will be followed by thirty minutes combined discussion, moderated by a commentator. There will be drinks and dinner following the workshop.

The exciting news is that there will be a keynote! We were able to secure the participation of Sverker Sörlin of the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm to deliver a lunchtime keynote! Sverker will speak about his project on the history of global environmental governance that pushes the boundaries of the history of science and environmental history: https://spheregovernance.org

If you would like to give a talk, serve as a moderator, or just attend the meeting, please complete the following registration form by Mai 15, 2024:  https://forms.gle/sZ7hWcdeDDqprWam8

We are limited to twelve scheduled ten-minute presentations. You are free to give the talk in any Swiss language or English. If you give the talk in a language other than English, you may want to consider providing a hand-out or include slides in English.

This edition of HSSuisse will conclude with an interactive multimedia discussion about the changing roles of the scientist and historians of science’s attempts to depict this shapeshifting actor in their accounts. To kickstart our discussion, moderated by Bruno Strasser, we invite you to submit the title of your favorite film featuring a scientist and the time of the key scene in the registration form.

We look forward to meeting you in May in Geneva!
