Abstract

This thesis which is entitled "Disarmament and development: the quest for global security", attempts to deal not only with the issues related to disarmament, (particularly non-nuclear disarmament) development and security (especially in the Third World), but attempts to highlight links between these concepts. The thesis aims to demonstrate the futility of expecting greater expenditure on arms to provide greater security. The futility of trying to achieve security through military means alone is emphasized. There is a hypothesis with three essential components which the thesis tries to validate. Firstly, the assumption that excessive military spending can be detrimental to global security, secondly, the world, the Third World in particular, has experienced consequential diversion of resources through excessive military expenditure, and thirdly, that Third World weapons production has not provided an adequate solution.
