The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel invites applications for the position of
Professor of the History of Capitalism
(mid-eighteenth century to the present) to begin on August 1st, 2023.
Your position
We are looking for a scholar who can cover the history of capitalism in teaching and research with the appropriate breadth and historical depth. Capitalism is understood, in a general sense, as a historically formed economic and social order as well as a knowledge system. Your research and teaching should further the Department of History's established focus on 'European History in a Global Perspective'. At the same time, we expect the candidate to contribute to innovative developments in the field, allowing for a variety of perspectives (e.g. global entanglements, human-nature relations, work and labour, gender relations or material cultures). You should be willing to collaborate across epochs and have a commitment to interdisciplinary and transversal cooperation.
Your profile
The successful candidate demonstrates an outstanding track record of internationally recognized publications. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. and, depending upon their status at the time of application, have a second book or advanced research project which allows them to enhance the history of capitalism in the department, the faculty, and the university. Demonstrated experience in teaching is expected, as is a familiarity with digital teaching and research tools. You should be prepared to supervise doctoral candidates and acquire third-party funding. Candidates should show a commitment to teamwork as well as active service on university committees.
We offer you
The University of Basel stands for excellence through diversity and is dedicated to equal opportunities and a family-friendly working environment. In the effort to increase the proportion of women in academic leadership positions, the university particularly welcomes applications from qualified women
Application
Candidates are requested to submit their applications documents according to the information at https://philhist.unibas.ch/en/applications/ via the online application portal of the University of Basel by 31 July 2022. Applications submitted by other means will not be considered.
