Geneva Jewish Library "Gérard Nordmann"

The library was founded in 1945 by the American Jewish Labor Committee (AJLC) and the Oeuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE).

Inventory

The Geneva Jewish Library disposes of more than about 30'000 volumes. It encloses a part (about 1000 volumes) of the collections of the library of the rabbi's seminar of Wroclaw which was destroyed by the Nazis. It also owns a manuscript of David Gans, the Sefer Nehmad ve-naïm, resulted in 1613 in Prague.

Library of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Library)

History

The ETH Library was founded along with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1855.

Inventory

The ETH-Bibliothek is the largest library in Switzerland and the main library of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.

The library collects in the first place recent technical literature in natural sciences, mathematics and technology. The Library holds more than 7 million items, including maps, old prints, scientific reports, audiovisual materials, journals, databases and other ressources.

The historical collection counts 46 '000 titles or 117' 000 volumes, mainly in science, architecture, military science, but also in humanities. The ETH library also has archives and private papers, archives about the origins of the ETH and of technology in general; archives about nuclear power in Switzerland (in 1941-1998), and a photographic collection of 1,5 million pictures.

Special emphasis is given to the electronic resources and to innovative services. The Knowledge Portal integrates several research-platforms in one central search box, that gives direct access to about 27 million documents.

Swiss National Library (NL)

History

The Swiss National Library (NL) was established in 1895. First in a private house in Bern, then in 1899 accommodated in the federal archive, the Swiss National Library is since 1931 in Hallwylstrasse in Bern.

Publications

The National Library publishes several Bibliographies: among other things the national bibliography (since 1901), the bibliography to the Swiss history (since 1958), lists of Swiss Periodicals.

Inventory

The Swiss National Library (NL) collects all publications that relate to Switzerland. The heart of the Swiss National Library is its Helvetica collection; it measures more than 54'000 linear metres and contains more than 5,2 million items. The NL also houses special collections: The Swiss Literary Archives (SLA); The print and drawing collections; The Dürrenmatt Centre in Neuchâtel; The digital collections, etc.
