The e-rara.ch platform makes digitized rare books from Swiss libraries available to the public, free of charge. The present focus is on 16th century Swiss prints. Further collections concern astronomy, architecture and urbanism, mathematics and physics.

All the documents are online available.

E-rara.ch is a national collaborative project forming part of the Swiss innovation and cooperation programme E-lib.ch: Swiss Electronic library. The project is run by the Bibliothèque de Genève, the ETH-Bibliothek Zurich, the University Library of Basel, the University Library of Bern, and Zurich Central Library. Other Swiss libraries participating in the project are: the BPU Neuchâtel, the Bibliothèque des Pasteurs, the BCU Lausanne, and the BCU Fribourg.

Geneva Jewish Library "Gérard Nordmann"

The library was founded in 1945 by the American Jewish Labor Committee (AJLC) and the Oeuvre de secours aux enfants (OSE).

Inventory

The Geneva Jewish Library disposes of more than about 30'000 volumes. It encloses a part (about 1000 volumes) of the collections of the library of the rabbi's seminar of Wroclaw which was destroyed by the Nazis. It also owns a manuscript of David Gans, the Sefer Nehmad ve-naïm, resulted in 1613 in Prague.

Münchhausen Library

The Münchhausens library documents the phenomenon Münchhausen for the time of 1760 till today. It intends to unite publications into as many languages as possible, to get hold of original editions of the early time and to the literary sources and to provide evidence of the treatment of the material in different media.

The Münchhausen's library encloses approx. 3,100 unities. There exists none publicly accessible catalogue. Now and then appear lists of branches on the website.

Elle documente le phénomène Münchhausen pour le temps de 1760 jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Avec cela elle prend en considération non seulement les aventures du baron dans leur diversité, mais encore des matériaux qui peuvent servir à l'examen de la formation et de l'histoire d'illustration qui couvrent la réception du phénomène ainsi qu'illustrent l'histoire contemporaine près de 1800.
La bibliothèque de Münchhausen comprend environ 3.100 unités. Il n'existe pas de catalogue public. Des listes de branches particulier apparaissent de temps en temps sur le site web.

The SFA were founded in 1798, at the dawn of the Helvetic Republic. Most of the files and documents stem from the period following 1798.

Publications

The Swiss Federal Archives (SFA) publish historical texts and auxiliary booklets. Different documents are online available to the following subjects: Studies and sources, Federal Archives dossier, inventories, auxiliary texts and further publications.

Research

The Swiss Federal Archives (SFA) preserve documents from the Federal Administration and the political bodies of the Federal State. The archive records for the most part consist of paper files, but there are also photos, audio and film documents as well as digital data.
The SFA has also been entrusted with over 550 private archives of people and organisations with close ties to the Federal State.

Inventory

Documents from the activity of the organs of the Swiss state (Federal administration, Federal Council and parliament) since the Helvetic Republic till the present. Personal papers of individuals and non-governmental institutions, that has played an essential role in the areas of politics, administration, army and science of history in the 19th and 20th century in Switzerland. Dossiers on particular subjects, events and personalities. Files of Swiss associations abroad, congresses and conferences as well as of Swiss regiments in foreign services. Important collection of copied Swiss-historical documents of foreign archives and libraries.
The files in the SFA are organised into 8 main departments:

-Archive of the Tagsatzung Period 1814-1848 (Main Department D)

The systematic fonds overview (SYFO) gives online an overview of the eight main departments and the fonds contained therein.

Staff at the SFA are on hand to support you with your research (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from 9:30 to 12:00 and from 13:00 to 15:00).

Abbey Library of St. Gallen

Characteristics
History

The library is attested for the first time by the Saint Galler Klosterplan (around 820). Major medieval centre of the writing and book painting. Since 1553 in a library building. In in 1758-1767 construction of the baroque Hall, which remains till this day the main depository of historical books.

Inventory

The Abbey Library of St. Gallen holds about 160'000 documents. 1650 incunabula, numerous early prints, important holdings from the 2nd half of 18. Century, but also from the time of late Humanism and Confessionalism. Main focuses in theology, history and the antique classics. About 2'000 manuscripts (400 Vols. from before 1000 A.D.). Irish manuscripts, Old German texts, archives from Aegidius Tschudi.

Remarks: 

The Abbey Library of St. Gallen is the oldest library in Switzerland. The Abbey Library and the entire abbey precinct in St. Gallen were included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage sites in 1983.
