Graduiertentagung an der Universität Basel, 21.-22. Juni 2019

The restructuring of the rural territory through the foundation of new villages, as an engine of urban economic development (Middle Ages-Early Modern Period)

Event category:

Introducing the topic
An Italian scholar of the Medieval settlements wrote that establishing new settlements and new communities is a creative and complex initiative "with an eminently political content", even when it is possible to recognize economic reasons or, less frequently, military ones.
We should not be surprised - continues the scholar - if the attention to the topic has been constant and has been highly interesting for historians, archaeologists, historians of architecture and urbanists, generating also a progressive integration of the dierent knowledge.

Forest clearing and land reclamation: between ownership rights and resource management, 10th – 20th century

01.02.2019 - 14:40
Event category:

The concepts of forest clearing and land reclamation have been a constant in the history of farming, and have crucially contributed to the transformation of Europe’s countryside. Centuries ago, our ancestors began the practice of clearing forests and draining the land, major works undertaken to increase the surface areas of arable land for farming production, to meet the demand for food and to promote more intensive practices of land use. These interventions have often called into question the existing forms of land appropriation and ownership systems.

Alpine vernacular architecture and the so-called pastoral revolution

Event category:

For a long time, the rural architecture of the upper valleys of the Alps has been perceived through a single glass: are the buildings made out of wood (the so-called chalet) or out of stone? This difference in the building materials was the main point of focalisation for researchers since the early XXth century, starting with the work of Jakob Hunziker for whom it was an indication of the linguistical affiliation of the populations (German versus Romance), to which Richard Weiss answered with his explanation phrased out in terms of ecological determinations.
